ARTPACE

Artpace San Antonio is a nonprofit residency program that supports regional, national, and international artists in the creation of new art. As a catalyst for artistic expression, we engage local communities with global art practices and experiences. To date, Artpace has welcomed over 254 artists through its renowned International Artist-in-Residence Program. Annually, Artpace hosts three residencies. Each feature one Texas-based artist, one national artist, and one international artist, who are selected by a notable guest curator. Each eight-week residency culminates in a two-month exhibition on site. The mission of this program is to provide artists with unparalleled resources that allow them to experiment with new ideas and take provocative risks. Artpace was founded by artist, collector, and businesswoman Linda Pace (1945-2007) in 1993 and opened to the public in 1995. Pace conceived of Artpace as a laboratory of dreams, providing artists from all over the world with an environment that would encourage experimentation and growth. In the years since, Artpace has garnered recognition for supporting creativity through its residency and exhibition programs, as well as its range of educational programs. Growing from the inspired vision of one woman, Artpace is now an internationally respected public institution and a cornerstone of contemporary art in San Antonio and the region.

FIVE POINTS TRANSIT CENTER

The newly renovated area includes significant updates for passenger comfort and accessibility at the busy service station. A ceramic sculpture installation by San Antonio artist Diana Kersey provides an eye-catching landmark for the neighborhood gateway. The Five Points project transformed an underutilized lot into an oasis of trees and native plants, providing a welcome respite to the nearly 1,000 VIA passengers who board its six west and northbound routes there daily. “The unique design of the Five Points Transfer Area was inspired by the high ridership that the stop has historically experienced,” VIA President/CEO Jeffrey C. Arndt said. “The dramatic transformation of this site makes it an inviting environment for VIA’s customers, and offers a convenient connection to the San Pedro Creek.”

JEWEL OF ART DANCE STUDIO

In 1925, the building at 1909 Fredericksburg Road, known then as the beautiful Parkmoor Drugstore, was considered one of the first shopping centers in the community. Its architectural design was the 1920’s Colonial Revival style. It clearly was a magnificent piece of art, considered the “Jewel” of its time. Similar designs eventually shaped the development of the Monticello Park, which became one of the most desirable areas in the 1920’s throughout the 1970’s. Unfortunately, in the 1980’s the south half of the building was demolished and left abandoned for more than three decades. The many years of neglect left the neighborhood locale severely stressed, and dilapidated. Today, thanks to much hard work and team effort, the north side of the building has been restored to its unique state of grandeur. Currently, it is inhabited by The Jewel of Art Dance Studio. Its new title is well-suited for all of the building’s spectacular design. The Jewel of Art is proud to be a part of the Monticello historical district. With great honor they continue the integrity and character of the building. This neighborhood hub will once again be a show stopper. The “diamond in the rough” will serve as the grand jewel for all to see, preserving its place in San Antonio history.
